Hi there all reformed friends!

Because of various reasons we have been laying low for a while. The work with the new record was more exhausting than we thought it was. We have had a bit of what is called post performance depression, PPD. The record has been very well received, but the psychedelic jazz rock business is not a brisk one. Therefor it is important to have a new goal to aim for. We have decided that we will concentrate on new songs and the ones we like the best from the album. We will try to develop new interesting sounds and approaches to our music so we do not get stuck.

We had a rehearsal last Tuesday and we actually made two new tunes. Very satisfying and relieving! I feel we have strength now and I hope that in a not so distant future we will do a release concert for Reveries of Reform.

It was really nice playing the Live at Festival in Örebro. We have decided to play the Emergenza Festival here in Stockholm. From what I know this festival is mainly for new hungry rock bands that want to reach out. I talked to the festival board about our participation and they actually assured me that we would not be completely out of the festival frame. On Tuesday, before we rehearse, we will do a promo photo shoot! Great!

Here is a newly edited video from last time we played the South Side Pub. Janne Kullhammar had never played the tune, The Faithful, but made a great interpretation anyway. There was not enough video recorded so a sequence from the movie 2001 has been made to work as a substitute. Enjoy!

Over to reform related matters:

On Saturday October 29th me and my long time friend Lars-Johan Brännmarkinitiated the work with Ralph Lundsten's new music. It will a multi musical experience where musical worlds meet and collide. All based on, as it seems, three new pieces by Ralph. The working title is River of Time.

The Andromeda studio is really something special, something completely out of the ordinary. We located everything and Ralph taught us how he use to work. Very interesting! Although Lars-Johan is a great engineer all this took quite a while.

On the 3rd of December we returned to begin the recording session. Ralph had prepared everything with choosing his sounds and by SMPTE coding a tape plus having constructed a very complicated background consisting of "cosmic noise". After having synchronized the computer with the 32-channel tape recorder the recording happened accordingly:

1. The midi signals from the piece were transferred to Ralph synthesizer unit where he mixed sounds from different modules.

2. The midi with the new sounds were recorded onto the tape in order to get the analog warmth. This process was made for every midi channel.

3. The music, now on tape, was in turn transferred back as audio tracks to the computer.

A very interesting and unique process. Well tried out to gain the best musical result.

Today was a very special day for me. I went to meet the Dream master himself, Ralph Lundsten in his pink castle, Villa Frankenburg. He and Fredrik Walldén, a very nice guy who (among other things) helps Ralph with his digital stuff, were sitting in the garden sofa when I arrived. They greeted me and we went inside the house. For me it was surreal since Ralph, for me, is a concept rather than an actual person, and there I was standing face to face with this charismatic 75-year-old legend. His eyes were piercing, but nice and friendly, and his voice was calm and clear.

As I entered his pink utopia it felt as if I were entering a different universe. Since his 2-year-old daughter was having her afternoon nap we had to go upstairs to his office. He asked me to turn on the cd so I handed it to Fredrik who put it on and while we were listening Ralph started to ask me questions about the music and how I defined it. I said that I called it jazz rock or progressive music. After a while he said that he use to call all the music that is hard to define cosmic music. So I guess for now on we play cosmic music!

We talked about music today and that it was hard to reach out to an audience from within the massive media flow. After talking about publishing rights and exchanging some necessary numbers Ralph said that he liked the music and that it sounded nice and welcoming, which made me very happy.

We went down to the kitchen, his protein laboratory as he calls it, for a coffee and some cookies. Before we went to the kitchen he asked me if I wanted to see the Andromeda Studio. Guess what my answer was! The studio was in perfect shape with a big 32-channel mixer, his Dimi-o and -s, the Andromatic synthesizer a 32-channel tape recorder, great big monitors and some computer equipment. Very interesting. He showed me some stuff and told me some stories about when for example Led Zeppelin visited the Andromeda Studio in the 70s!

Well in the kitchen we had coffee with another guest, his wife and daughter and Fredrik. Only to be in the protein laboratory is an experience. There are paintings and decorations everywhere. In the kitchen there are visual discoveries to be made which could last for a week. We talked about music and Ralph share anecdotes and opinions about everything.

After that we went back to the studio and Ralph played some music and sang and danced a bit. A very lively experience! I bought his autobiography, another book of his called Happy Earthday and two discs called Out in the Wide World and Festlust. I also asked him to sign a vinyl that I brought, Nordic Naturesymphony No.1 "The Neck", which he did.

After this two-hour-visit I said "thank very much and goodbye". He shook my hand and said "keep up the fight". Fredrik and I also shook hands and i was off with a very happy feeling filling up my mind.

It was a great experience meeting Ralph and I feel motivated by the visit and even more eager to finalize this project with a great result. An nice and inspiring experience indeed!

Per Tjernberg is a legend that has recorded numerous solo albums. He actually recorded an entitled Don't Stop in 1983. Listen to Lucumi Suite from that album with no one else but Doktor Åke Erksson himself on the drums:

Bill Öhrström once turned down a part as singer in an English r&b band. This band later became The Who!!! On Jimi Hendrix' first visit to Stockholm Jimi stayed at Bills apartment in Stockholm. Bill produced the legendary Swedish duo Hansson & Karlsson and has all his life played music and lived for playing music. He has played with everyone! Bill is always young! Here is a a clip from one of the times when he played with us at Stampen. Åke is playing the drums:

The work with the new album is proceeding. We have more than twelve songs to choose from. There is a jam also which I really would like to include. Let's see if there is enough space. Anyway, I am more than satisfied with what has come together up until now. The keyboards are amazing. It seems as if Mattias and Magnus form a great team. On Sunday May 8 I am planning for a big jam session with some special guests. If it works out I will give you the details. I will contact everybody as soon as Easter is over.

I am also going through all the Reform concerts chronologically. It was not until the concert at Kolingen in November 2009 that I started to record the concerts with active microphones and DAT. There is a lot of material with quite horrible sound quality and I have become better at mixing and restoring over the years. I am working with the concert from Gamlingen on the April 12 2009. It is quite interesting to hear how the group has developed the sound since then. This work will of course end up in a digital release called something similar to "Best of Reform Live 2009-2010". The physical and digital album Uncut & Lo-Fi, though it still feels interesting, is no longer a representative source of how the group sounds live. This is, firstly, due to the sound quality and secondly because we now have a steady crew. There is actually yet another album in pipeline. I believe it will be only a digital release and it will consist of all the alternative takes, demos and versions of the songs included and excluded on and from the sessions leading up to the completion of the new album.

Why I want to use some recorded jams on the album is because I still want to convey that Reform is based on music created in the moment. Music that is not the same twice.

Loungemusik eller experimentell jazz? Den frågan kan man utan tvekan ställa sig när man lyssnar på bandet Reforms skiva Reformed.

Jag ska vara ärlig. Hade jag plockat upp Reformed i närmaste skivbutik och läst vad för typ av musik det var jag höll i, hade jag aldrig lagt pengar på skivan. Så avtänd blir jag på experimental jazz.

Men så är inte fallet nu. När jag klickade på play på Spotify möttes jag av musik vars like jag aldrig stött på. Jag kallar det för experimentell jazz, andra kanske skulle säga hissmusik. Jag själv får en lugn känsla i kroppen när jag tar del av skivans enda sex låtar. Det finns en bra balans mellan de konstanta lugna beatsen och gitarrerna a la Jimi Hendrix som ibland kommer in i låtarna.

Det finns varken sång eller något som verkar som en röd tråd. Reformed är däremot en skiva att ta fram när dagarna är stressiga och maten bränns vid på spisen. Det är en skiva som för dig till en annan miljö, vare sig det är en strand i Thailand eller en takvåning i New York.

Låt oss gå tillbaka till exemplet om skivbutiken. Hade jag vetat mer om bandet, baserat på det jag nu har lyssnat på, hade jag tagit upp plånboken. För visst finns det en mening med musiken som strömmar ut ur högtalarna. En mening som jag mer än gärna vill ta del av.

To conclude this post I will present you with something that is definitely not very Reformish. In the spring of 2010 we made two concerts in which we incorporated some cover songs performed vocally by Bill Öhrström. The first time we did some 60s soul music and the second time we did some 60s American Psychedelia. The three following songs are from that second gig in May 2010.

Dear reformers!

Yesterday, February 24, we produced yet another outtake for the new album. It is called Align and is written by me and Peter. The lyrics are also by us. Yes, I just mentioned lyrics! It is the first Reform track with actual vocals, by me. I am satisfied with both the lyrics and the singing.

Why a vocal track? Our goal is to have three tracks with vocals on the new album and it is partly because we do some Grateful Dead tracks live and then thought "why not try to do some tracks of our own with vocals?". Another reason may be that it is important to broaden one's horizons: Can we keep our sound although we incorporate vocals? Judge for yourself! I think it works and really brings a dark, gloomy feeling to the improvisation.

The following tracks with vocals will, I suppose, be Nuclear War, which I co-wrote in the middle 90's with my old friend Petter Nyhlin, and a song written by me, Anders and Peter called Here's to Life. We played both these songs under the name Mountain Men at Mats Jarl's Backstage Festival in August 2010. Mountain Men is a side project consisting of only Peter, Anders and myself.

To confuse you some more I will end this with a clip with Janis Joplin playing the song Raise Your Hand from Frankfurt in 1969. This is great! A genius at her best!

On the 6th of February we had yet another great rehearsal with the new fantastic Reform line-up. Everyone is contributing and this time we rehearsed two new tunes:

Little Vienna, composed by Peter Åkerberg and

Groovy Thunder, composed by Micke Hujanen.

Little Vienna is a beautiful piece not too inspired by the place where we now have played two weekends in total, I hope. For me, the name actually fits the composition perfectly. It sounds like a strange dream, as a painting of Salvador Dalí would sound and like a circus in black and white from the 20's. Peter plays the lead and hands over the first solo to Hujanen and then takes over to hand over the wheel to Magnus Ramel and then the conclusion comes with the theme played all over again.

Groovy Thunder is a very bombastic piece. It feels very genuinely jazz-rocky with roots from Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra. It is basically based on three riffs, each of them very strong and quite intricate harmonically. The first solo is performed by Mattias Lennestig and the second one is played by Peter.

I am certain that this upcoming album will be great. Taste the name "Age of Reform". How does it sound and feel?

These two tunes are not the only musical matters that came out of the rehearsal. We also had a great Jam. Jamming is the moment when there will be magic or not. When it feels right you just go with the flow and actually starts wondering "what is that fantastic music that I'm hearing?". It is almost as magic as opening Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce. Either you are caught up in it or not. You can talk about it for hours, but the only conclusion is that music is one of the last remnants from when the still not rational human beings roamed the earth and the air was filled with magic. It is nice to sometimes not feel so rationalized.

The talented group Reform and their fabulous CD, "Easy," captures the essence of instrumental Jazz with sophisticated style and grace. Reform is not only a creative group, but their Jazzy style has originality as some songs emit Avant Garde tonality with intense precision. The opener, "Six," has a smooth groove with a melodic guitar, sweet electric piano, funky bass riffs, and soft drum brushes. The song, "Baker," features expressive percussive drums and silky guitars that weave a melodic melody with a rich relaxing quality. "Scapegrace," is another song with finely tuned drums that meld with the electric piano and funky bass while the guitars interject harmonious riffs. Another Xmas is over. Yet again consumerism has reach new peaks in the western world at the same time as people in other parts of the world are starving.

Whatever you do: Do not forget that there are other people living on earth alongside yourself! Let us take care of each other!

Back to music:

I have edited and re-edited three songs from this year's Backstage Festival. I am very satisfied with the Mountain Men sound on all three videos. There is a raw, spontaneous and fresh, sort of punky, touch about the whole performance. First up is Nuclear War, which is now also a part of Reform's repertoire. Composed by me and my old teenage music friend Petter Nyhlin.

The second one is Here's to Life. It surfaced during a jam with me, Anders and Peter in January 2009. This is the first song we played at the festival and we had not had time to do a proper sound check. That's why the levels are a bit strange in the beginning.

The third one is Divine, composed by Jukka Kemppainen, a guitarist from Skövde. It has a really catchy chorus. I have the original somewhere, probably on cassette or DAT. I will present it here if I ever find it. Anyway, I believe this to be a very good song.

Here follows the final set from the concert at Restaurang Lilla Wien. It consists of ten songs. We mix in some covers also. For the first time we played Sweet Jane by the Velvet Underground. It is always nice playing good music whatever genre it may be.

Greetings fellow reformers!

It was a nice gathering at Restaurang Lilla Wien last weekend and a nice premier for the "new" Reform with Micke Hujanen on guitar and Mattias Lennestig on keyboard. We played three sets consisting of our own material plus some Grateful Dead and some Miles Davis' tunes.

Friday evening was somewhat "searching", but still satisfying. Saturday night was great. The energy level was on top and, according to me, everyone was playing great! I think this is the best line-up so far. It really feels like a band and not like some musicians jamming together. This time I think we are forming a sound consisting of very open-minded musicians in search for unity.

On Thursday evening November 18 we had a fantastic rehearsal playing only Reform tunes. Micke Hujanen really got into it and had a lot of suggestions concerning groove and arrangement, but above all he added a fantastic atmosphere both musically and environmentally.

For me, as the band leader, it was a wonderful feeling!!! We are going to rehearse Sunday, Monday and Tuesday also. Everything to give you an as pleasant as possible concert experience on the 26th and 27th at Lilla Wien!

I attended a release party for a group called Pocket Size and their album The hornplayer from the milky way.
This album is my tip of the day. It is a great mixture of Zappa, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Mahavishnu Orchestra. The group is lead by an old friend of mine, Peter Pedersen, who also writes all the group's material. Listen to this album! You won't regret it! I hope that Pocket Size and Reform will do some gigs together in the near future.

Good news! Reform finally has agreed on a record deal with the progressive record label Transubstans Records. We feel very satisfied with that and hope that it will help our music to gain more exposure. The work continues with the new record that will hopefully be out sometime in early 2011.

A new Wasa Express album is also up on Spotify. It is called Search for a New World and it a quite special one. It is focused on melodies and is very well produced. It is also special in that sense that it is a very serious album. No Wasa Express-like jokes. Judge yourself! In my opinion it is one of their finest since the focus is on music only.

If you have not yet enjoyed Whatsoever, the new album by Ulf Henningsson, then you better do. It is one of those that gets better and more interesting the more you listen to it.

Dear reformers!

We had a wonderful time in Gothenburg at Truckstop Alaska and we enjoyed an evening in the great spirit of Grateful Dead. Mushroom Pickers made a great interpretation and so did Den stora Vilan. We also enjoyed rehearsing and Micke Hujanen has been a great complement to the group and really glues with us musically. It is great to know so many wonderful musicians.

Fellow reformers!

I am experiencing troubles switching computers from PC to Mac. I have used Vegas for video editing and now I have to switch to Final Cut, I presume. Due to that videos from the Backstage Festival have not been published and no new audio tracks either. I have waited for a special mixer board in order to finish up all the old PC projects and it arrived today, so tomorrow I will start working.

Meanwhile I want to tell you that the work with the tribute concerts for Jerry Garcia in Gothenburg and Stockholm is in progress. We rehearsed with the basic unit yesterday and it went very well. We also played Birds of a Feather by Phish. Peter handled the vocals brilliantly! Micke Hujanen did a great work on guitar and it was a wonderful experience playing with Mattias Lennestig from Reform 1,2 and 3 again. Great to play with dedicated musicians who really put an effort in studying the songs.

Fellow reformers!

A lot has been going on. The plans for the Jerry Garcia celebration is in the making. Reform will play in Gothenburg on September 25 and in Stockhol on October 2.

While waiting for all the material from the rehearsals and from the Backstage Festival, which was a success, I'll give you some other things to enjoy. Among those one complete song from the soon to be released album by Berglund, Kullhammar & Bergman Trio.

Hi there!

The gig at Mosebacke became a very appreciated circus act conducted by Gunhild Carling.

Tomorrow it's time for the fourth Bacsktage Festival. Anders, Peter and me have rehearsed and we are going to perform as the Mountain Men. We are going to play five songs:

It's late (Bergman, Bergman, Åkerberg)
Lady With a Fan (Grateful Dead)
Shy Away from the Higher Tension (Henningsson)
Divine (Kemppainen)
Nuclear War (Bergman, Nyhlin)

The third song is a cover from Ulf Henningsson's new album, Whatsoever, which was recorded in July.

The fourth song is written by Jukka Kemppainen. I don't know how, but it ended up with Jörgen Löf and me in the late nineties. We made a recording and then nothing further happened. A couple of days ago it surfaced when I was looking through some old stuff and when I listened to it I realized what a great song it is. Thank you Jukka Kemppainen! (Who is also a very good guitarist).

The fifth song has been with me since the early nineties. A guy named Petter Nyhlin and me used to jam together at my parents house. Petter and me made many songs and then we, unfortunately, lost contact. We saw each other once in Stockholm but the creative magic was gone. During the nineties Petter had a very good group called The Smash Hit Wonders. Hope he is ok wherever he is and whatever he is doing!

How sad! I just recieved notice that there will not be a JerryWeek starting on the August 1. Some bands jumped ship due to various complications and so the manager at Nürnberghuset got cold feet it seems. Mabbe from Mushtroom Pickers is having another shot at it in September. Hope it works!

I have not written anything here for more than a month. Bad me! Actually I have not had access to the Internet.

The summer started out with me producing a great new band from Stockholm called Face My Days. They recorded a five song EP for my Label, Onebeard Records. The recording will be available for downloading in August or September.

Then I had a fantastic recording session with Berglund, Kullhammar & Bergman Trio. We recorded seven songs. They are to be mixed in August.

On August 7 it is time for the Backstage Festival for the fourth time! This year Carl-Eiwar Sect will not play, unfortunately. That's Mats' policy and it's good I think. Otherwise there would only be the same groups playing every year. Mountain Men will of course play. This time with Peter Åkerberg on guitar. I think it will be great. Me, Anders and Peter are very used to each other since we play together in Reform. Maybe Magnus Ramel will join us too. I hope so!!!

For the moment I am in Mariestad recording Ulf Henningssons second album, an EP consisting of seven tracks that we co-produce. Uffe is, as we speak, making some guitar overdubs. On the recording there are only me, Uffe and my Anders playing. Uffe does the guitars and the lead vocals and some backing vocals, I do the bass, the keyboards and backing vocals and Anders (from Reform) does the drums, percussion and some backing vocals. It seems it is turning out fine! It will be released in August or September.

Dear fellow reformers!

A lot has been happening since last time. There was a support event for the great record store Multi Kulti here in Stockholm. Two nights filled with music. On June 1 and 2 the event took place at Södra Teatern (South Theatre). A lot of great musicians had gathered to help and to honour the only place in Stockholm where you still can talk about and buy non-mainstream music.

You may ask yourself why it has to be special event to save a record store. Ten years ago the record store was the gathering point for music enthusiasts and musicians. In the record store you could be tipped off about a great album and meet interesting people.

Now, the general Swede seems more interested in buying online and discuss music on forums, and why not? It is easy and you do not have to leave your home.

I strongly believe that there is something missing in a European capital if it cannot offer that special, narrow cultural product, or whatever special thing you may be looking for. There are actually certain things that you cannot experience on the internet. Not even with Skype can you get really close to a person. We need real contact and interaction in order to feel alive!

I remember myself in the early 90s going to Memphis Skivbörs in Skövde. There were a lot of nerds there. One of those nerds saw that I had picked up a Who collection, and without this interaction I would never have become the Who-freak I, in many ways, still am. The owner of the record store let me work there on weekends and he also put me in contact with Mats Jarl, the founder of the Backstage Festival, and I started playing bass in his group, Uncle Madcap. He is still one of my best friends. All this for a record store! I know that my story is only one of an infinite amount of stories about what record stores have meant to people through time.

Anyway, to this special event. On July 2 a constellation called Wasa Exprextra played.

The line-up consisted of a mix from Wasa Express, EGBA and Reform:

The world can be a cold and heartless place. A smile can make a change, an encouraging hug may give someone warmth and a good song may fill you up with hope. To say free is the same as being free. Something that sums up what the classic bay area bands of the 60s were about. Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead among others send me a warm message from a time I didn't experience myself, but strongly believe in from the feeling I get from their music. I am not a naive person and I know that some people always try to earn money and power on nothing and everything. A good idea still remains a good idea whatever corruptions it is submitted to. The idea of a collective being, an expanded mind which would lead to peace, love and understanding is an idea that I strongly support and believe that we need today. We need to show people that we are real people who are able to feel, respect an honour one another, just as we are with all our shortcomings.

We tried our best to honour the band that nurtured these thoughts up until the death of their guitarist, Jerry Garcia. The still existing members of Grateful Dead continue carrying the flame and we wanted to help them on the way by playing three of their songs at our latest show at Lilla wien. First out was the beautiful Eyes of the World. Hope you enjoy it!

The rehearsal went well and we feel prepared for the weekend's concerts!

We will start with a set consisting of me and Bill on vocals singing songs by Grateful Dead, Lovin' Spoonful, Tim Hardin, Love and Buffalo Springfieldd.

In the 60s Bill played in a group called the Merrymen. Alongside him in that group was Bo Hansson, who in 1970 became famous with his solo debut Lord of the rings (listen to a track further down). He died on april 24 2010 at aged 67. Sweden lost a great musician and creator. In 1967 Bill Öhrström produced the album Monument with Hansson's legendary duo, Hansson & Karlsson. Enjoy the track Taxfree from that album. It became part of Jimi Hendrix' live set. In 1967 Jimi Hendrix was in Sweden and according to the legend the first thing he asked when coming off the plane was: "Where is Harlington and Carlington?". Whether that is true or false is open for discussion, but one thing that is true is, that on that visit Hendrix lived in Bill Öhrström's apartment in Stockholm. Those were the days!

The concert at Stampen on March 28 went really well! Stampen is an incredible place and draws a really music interested crowd. The sound check was inspiring and when it was time to enter the stage we were really up to it. We started out the concert with Tax Vobiscum, written by Magnus Ramel. A groovy tune which really set the mood for the rest of the concert, which became quite heavy and very spontaneous. The concert at Regent Pub on February 17 was an interesting experience since we had to play at such a low volume. You could easily tell that the band members had longed for an electrifying experience. We were introduced by Terje Dilkestad and then started our seven song journey to outer space.

I would like to share this clip with you. Phish performs Watcher of the Skies by Genesis when the group was inducted into Rock'n'Roll hall of Fame. It was very nice to hear this blend between USA jam band and prog rock pioneers from England. Very good!

Hi there!

A few days ago I came to think about a piece called In the Fir Wood (I Furuskogen) written by the Swedish national romantic Wilhelm Peterson Berger in the 1890s. Maybe I was a bit touched to see the snow starting to melt away and to hear and see how everything started to live up again after this cold and dark winter. I wanted to arrange and play this beautiful piece! I presented the group with the idea and they agreed to play it. When trying it out with Magnus he suggested a Steve Reich-like improvisation over four chords and I had heard Jonte singing while soloing so I asked hime to make a unison voice-guitar solo. Everything came out beautifully.

In Sweden right wing extremists have stolen our flag and our right to say that we love our country and to sing our national anthem. I love Sweden and its strange, quiet ambience and its beauty with all the woods and all the rivers and lakes and how it is constantly changing because of the huge differences between the four seasons, but I believe in a multicultural society unlike those who call themselves nationalists. I really would like to call myself a nationalist but I cannot because the term is associated with something I definitely do not support!

"Songs for Salaam/Shalom" by Bamjimba (World Artist from England)

The most recent release by the talented artist Bamjimba is "Songs for Salaam/Shalom." This album is a single release, of sorts, as it contains 3 different versions of the same song, "Allulam Hadash." This release is one for charity and aimed at giving young Jewish and Muslim listeners music they can both enjoy and dance to. "Allulam Hadash (feat. Michal Nahman)" is a more relaxed version of the song with very enlivened drum lines. "Allulam Hadash (slamdogz Remix)" is a more brooding, spacey, and psychedelic version of the song and contains hallucinatory choir like vocals cascading over the stirring percussion. "Allulam Hadash (special Dj Aka Ak Re-mix)" is still spacey, but with a definite danceable feel to it and has more emphasis on the instrumentation as opposed to the vocals. This release is perfect for those who appreciate music that tries to meld the worlds of Jewish and Muslim listeners. And because the proceeds go to a worthy cause, you can feel good as you dance to Bamjimba's "Songs for Salaam/Shalom."

Equal parts jazz and instrumental psychedelic / progressive rock, Reform's debut CD, "Reformed," charts a middle ground that ably fuses classic styles and influences - with an unusual twist. With a stellar 6-piece ensemble behind him, harmonica player Àlvaro Fernandez Gavíria's full, lower-octave playing serves as a primary lead instrument for much of the album. With studied restraint, Gaviria's tone – which recalls that of accomplished blues harp-stylist, Corky Siegel, approaches his instrument like a fusion-oriented Miles Davis, drawing out found harmonics within the framework of the band's rich and melodic songscapes. Guitarists Johan Glasson and Peter Åkerberg create the underpinning for Reform's – at times, Steely Dan-like jazz-rock sound, while drummers Anders Bergman and Åke Eriksson provide the forward thrust, effectively filling passages with deft and meticulous hits and textures. Not to go unmentioned, bassist Jesper Bergman and keyboard player, Magnus Ramel's contributions are no less vital - and noteworthy, to Reform's decidedly adventurous leanings. Regardless of whether it's fusion jazz or spacey art rock, Reform's CD is a terrific set of original music by unique players with unbounded skills.

"The Demolished Man" is the latest release from the talented group Amptek and the Exit Strategy. In this album electronic artist Amptek collaborates with the instrumental ensemble known as the Exit Strategy to create an album filled with a variety of electronic songs that employs a mixture of genres and moods. The track, "Cause and Effect," is a slow moving, thought provoking song in which a crisp and clean piano interacts with the smooth and flowing drums providing a melody that is delicate and moody. "Technology of Power" is a song that is fresh and invigorating as there are edgy guitar hooks and riffs, funky bass lines, and a hue of energy bringing this song together. "Aurora" by Spiker (Electronic Artist from Czechoslovakia)

"Aurora" is the latest release from Spiker. It is a collection of genial and calm electronic compositions for creating a relaxed atmosphere. "Sunup" is a song in which a subdued drum rhythm interacts with a frolicking flute line. "Butterfly" is a tune that has an electro-Latin feel and features a female vocalist crooning softly. "Bearer" is a little bit more energized, with spacey piano sounds and a briskly stuttering drum beat. This is an album that blurs many genres of music into a seamless collection of electronic music that soothes as much as it inspires. If you appreciate contemporary, chilled-out background music then Spiker's "Aurora" is an album for you.

"You're All Wrong-EP" by HolliePollock has a cool alternative sound to it while also having the Classic Rock feel of Zepplin to it as well. The vocals are just as gritty as the instrumentation and lyrics which gives this album an abundance of intensity. The title track, "You're All Wrong" with its dynamic drums and talented bass emulates both lyrically and musically an expression of loneliness that's identifiable with everyone. "13th Sun" is another talent-dense track on the EP with strong and solid guitar work that embellishes the lyrical vocal. The music is on the forefront while the vocals linger behind in an almost spooky, but interesting way. This CD contains 5 tracks of intense Classic Rock music spanning this bands performance of outstanding musical capability. If any kind of Rock music is your preference, then this EP is definitely well worth hearing.

"Firefly" by Indus (World Artist from the United Kingdom)

"Recorded live in studio, Indus' debut CD "Firefly" is an exhilarating mix of Eastern melodies and instrumentation performed with a jazz ensemble-like flair for spontaneity, improvisation and - not least, playfulness. Incorporating sitar, santoor (a 100-stringed instrument played with wooden mallets), Western flute and tabla, the 4-piece band stretches the boundaries of their Hindustani-inspired music in a musical exploration that's both rich in tradition as well as brilliantly modern. On CD-opener, "Mind the Gap," Indus' playfulness is in full evidence; a rhythmically complex piece that challenges each musician to stay true to the beat, it is an 11-minute workout of pure inspiration. "A Night at the Court" utilizes improvisational scat-like singing (called "bols," the language of tabla) over a regal melody reminiscent of classical Persian extemporization. In fact, the album's opus, "Esfahan," draws the neighboring cultures of India, Pakistan and Iran into sharp relief over the course of a wildly provocative 19-minute jam that gives each player more than ample space to improvise and experiment with melody, rhythm, tone and harmony. Equally challenging and rewarding, the evocative "Firefly" CD by Indus is perfect for fans of Indian music, or for listeners of similarly modern World Music visionaries (e.g., John McLaughlin's Shakti or Anouar Brahem).

"I am no loger of this world" by Don Krim (Classical Artist from The United States)

Don Krim's classical operatic album is titled "I am no longer of this world." This is the countertenor's debut album, featuring Suzanne Bradbury on the piano, in which he sings Gustav Mahler's "Ruckert Lieder" and Peter Lieberson's "Rilke Songs." Krim's voice is breathtaking and while it may remind one of a mature choir-boy or a mezzo-soprano, it actually is neither and superior at the same time. "Atmen, du unsichtbares, Gedicht!" is a song in which we can hear how his voice can lie in such a high register, yet also resonate deeply, in this song that embodies both dark and bright themes simultaneously. In "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" one can really hear the beauty within Suzanna Bradbury's finesse upon the piano and it interplays with Don's soaring voice. This is an album that any fan of classical vocal composition would enjoy. If you already enjoy the likes of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson then "I am no longer of this world" is an album you will want to hear immediately.

"As It Should Be" by A Beautiful Curse (Electronic Artist from Texas(TX))

A Beautiful Curse's latest album is "As It Should Be." This album, for the most part, contains lower tempo Electronic music; which at times is quite psychedelic and is aimed at almost being "positive dream music" for the listener. The opener, "On the Other Side," starts off with beautiful female vocals over an almost gritty and menacing background rumble before a trip-hop like beat comes in to take over the song. "A Mind of Its Own" is a more fantasy-like song in which a steady beat is held down with ambient sounds and vocals fading in and out from all directions. The song, "This Is My House," is an all out Electronica track with a dancing and pulsating beat that will make you want to stand up and groove. This album is an amalgam of contemporary psychedelic styles which all come from a place of positive inspiration. If you appreciate slightly hallucinatory electronic sounds, or like any type of dream-like music, then you might agree this album is exactly "As It Should Be."

"When She's Around" by The Dave Rawlinson Band (Country Artist from Seattle, Washington(WA))

The Dave Rawlinson Band put together a relaxed, classic Country album with "When She's Around." Rawlinson's vocals are spot on and definitely hit that country twang without sounding trite. Like Johnny Cash before him, there are fast-paced Country duets with Alexandra Rawlinson. The song, "Big John," sounds like music from an old western soundtrack, accented with haunting whistles. "I Try to Think About Elvis" is an especially powerful track, with electric guitar and both vocalists putting in a strong performance with exceptional harmonies. "When She's Around" is a solid Country album that can easily hold it's own against any mainstream Country performers today.

"Blaze Away" by Brokenworks (Rock Artist from Oregon(OR))

The most recent album from Brokenworks goes by the name of "Blaze Away." It is an album recorded, to be very vague, in a "Rock" style mentality but that doesn't say much as the songs of the album fall everywhere on the Rock genre spectrum. What unites the music of the album is that is it created as a tuneful affirmation of God's love. "Count It All Joy" is a boisterous and fun Rock song that celebrates the feelings of joy one can feel within their life. "Long Live the King" is a slow moving Rock ballad, with a focus on the piano that is in reverence to the creator of us all. "Sanctuary" is a song that decides to simplify things and focus on the harmony between male and female vocals, with a beautifully played acoustic guitar in the background. This album is perfect for those who enjoy a band who attempts to show many sides of Rock music within one album, as well as those who appreciate Contemporary music that is in celebration of the divine.

"A Journey Through Middle-Earth" by Ad Dios (Ambient Artist from Sweden)

Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, "A Journey Through Middle-Earth," the new CD by Ad Dios, is a terrific diversion into musical fantasy. Combining basic acoustic instruments with trippy electronic notes, this album takes the listener's mind out of the box at an easy tempo. Named after the setting of the Lord of the Rings saga, the opening track, "Middle-Earth," sets the stage with looming melodies, coupled with bongos and chimes progressing from soft to powerful. Toward the end, the track "Rohan" invests the listener with the feelings of LOTR's main human character (Rohan) with electronic, regal-sounding trumpets and a steady bass line. Glaze GetEm's new album goes by the name of "HitMaker." This album is recorded in the contemporary and mainstream Rap/Hip-Hop style, with auto-tuned vocals and catchy hooks designed to make everyone in the club hit the dance floor. In "Drivin' Down The Road" we find a toe-tapping, Honky-Tonk tune, about the interesting life of being a trucker. "SCR Exclusive" is the latest Hip-Hop/Rap EP released by Harlem's own J-Mill. It is an EP geared toward mature audiences and does contain explicit language and lyrics. "City Boy" is a track in which J-Mill tells about his new life back in the city after some time in jail over a relatively cheerful Hip-Hop beat that features a creative sampling of Journey's classic tune, "Don't Stop Believing." However, the title track, "SCR Exclusive" has a grander and gritty beat in which J-Mill rhymes with more aggressiveness. While the last track, "Brand New" is a more laid back, very New-York sounding, Rap track in which he seems to have some special lady in mind. Alan Bernhoft more than accomplished his intended goal with his recent album, "Beatlesque Too." The British Invasion sound from the early sixties made popular by The Beatles is alive and well on this album. Bernhoft captures the twangy guitars, the easy flowing harmonies, and simple drum beats with ease. The bouncy song, "All of the Time" features a solid harmonica solo while vocals and harmonies are exceptional. The last track "Come On Baby" is an obvious call to "Twist and Shout," the popular Beatles cover. The average track is not long in length but these songs don't lose the nostalgic throwback of this era. This album doesn't take liberties, risks, or get too adventurous as it simply produces quality song after quality song that could have come straight out of 1964. Fans of The Beatles don't miss an opportunity to hear the excellent songs of "Beatlesque Too."

"Recipes for Modern Life" by New Zealand band Dizrhythmia is a psychedelic funk CD with a feel of Folk and a little bit of Country. All of the tracks utilize acoustic guitars put with trance-like lead vocals reminiscent of Woodstock singers of the classic sixties. On the track "Song for Nikki," harmony is employed with a violin which brings a really classy and truly sentimental element to the CD which is furthered by the articulate lyrics. The track of which the title was based, "A Recipe for Modern Life," is a "feel good" track that incorporates a fluid-sounding trumpet with the steady high hat and snare drum tempo that takes the listener for a walk on an easier side of life. "Burlington Street" is a groovy track that will get the listener moving to the catchy lyrics and sharp rhythm. All around, this album is excellent for those who enjoy easy listening music with good instrumentation and meaningful lyrics.

Triflemore blends the guitar and voice into one beautiful sound on their latest disc, "Words From Notes." The talented duo is comprised of singer Susan Rhea, who hails from small-town America, and guitarist Owen Goudie from the Shetland Islands. Together, their collaborative talents combine to produce a touching CD, filled with throwback sounds of folk singers from the late 1960's. Rhea's voice is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell in all the best ways imaginable. Her voice is wonderful to hear and her eloquent tones can be heard on songs like "Goudfield" and "Perfect." Not to go unnoticed, Goudie's finger style guitar work is also exceptional in its own right. You can tell he has crafted his melodies around Rhea's vocals and intertwines them so one does not overshadow the other. A highlight of his playing can be heard on "Signal." "Words From Notes" is a perfect fit for any Joni Mitchell or Emmylou Harris fan and could very well be used to paint the soundtrack of all of our lives.

Finlay Morton takes a crop of classic rock influences and fuses them together with some country, resulting in a fine album called "Back to Basics 2009 Remix." Morton's songwriting is very similar to that of Tom Petty, with Americana flowing throughout the album and the sound of an organ whirling about. This influence is most evident on songs like "Hang On To Your Dreams" and "My Friend". The best attribute about Morton is his silky rock voice, emulating the more recent vocal tones of Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. Give "Scary Monsters" a good listen and you will hear those vocal tones similar to Waters'. There is also some nice country lap steel work on the song "Back To The Start". If you own Petty's "Wild Flowers" album or anything put out recently by Neil Young, you will love Finlay Morton's "Back to Basics 2009 Remix."

"Long Way To Morning" is a true-to-its-roots rock album from Finnish outfit The boots. This album is filled with great rock arrangements from a set of tight and experienced musicians who nicely incorporate progressive and blues elements into their sound. The electric guitar drives the entire album, with great riffs and solos alike, splicing themselves throughout and solidifying the sound. Their influences draw from the '60s, '70s, and '80s from the likes of The Beatles, The Doors, Electric Light Orchestra, and a variety of rhythm 'n blues pioneers. Suffice to say, that is where their sound sticks. The songs are catchy and melodic, complimenting the rock arrangements nicely. The production quality of "Long Way To Morning" is quite good and the entire record sounds polished, though some of that must be accredited to the band. You can really tell that talent played a big role in the quality of the product. "Corduroy Man" has a great rock & roll arrangement, bluesy guitar solos, and a catchy chorus. "Never Meant to Shine" is a ballad with incredible vocal layering, an acoustic lead, and electric riffs. "Long Way To Morning" is another hit album from a longstanding mainstay of the Scandinavian rock scene. Fans of classic rock and great blues guitar, check out The boots.

Another great selection on "Men and Flies" is the song "Tattooed on My Eyes." This song has that element of fusing both old and new rock sounds with an end result of something between The Band and Ryan Adams. Hagfors really does an outstanding job on this CD and is a real hidden gem amongst his musical peers.

CD-opener, "Into the Surf," with its lush, melodic sweep, suggests the ambience of a windswept ocean at dawn; "Deep Rocky Reef," more jagged & imposing, hints at the dangers that lurk in unfathomable depths; "Blueness" explores limitless shallows & its intrinsic natural beauty; and "Underwater," with its orchestral strains of epic proportion, calls forth the sea's mystery and its inscrutable wonder. "Charlie Comes First" by Artificial Happiness (Adult Alternative Artist from England)

Displaying a keen penchant for grand rock 'n' roll dramatics reminiscent of Jim Steinman's seminal productions (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler), Artificial Happiness stakes its claims to rock glory on their 1st full-length CD, "Charlie Comes First." With a studied feel for rock's capacity as a robust storytelling vehicle, the UK band mixes guitar-laden rock with electronica flourishes & over-the-top, hook-filled choruses in a 10-song collection that's as memorable as it is immediate. "Baby to Have You I Have to Leave You" opens the CD with a Peter Gabriel-like vibe that bursts open in a chorus that's danceable & sing-along catchy; "Unknown is Her Name" is a terrific slice of classic 3-chord guitar rock that recalls Prince at his best; & "Patient Patient Love" employs Ray Davies-like theatrics to provocative & winning effect. Elsewhere, the propulsive dance track, "Pray for Me in Jesus' Name," shows the band's dance grooves are as potent as their rock thunder, & "Maria Let Me In" proves they are equally adept with a moving power ballad. With each song its own fertile & well-crafted mini-drama, Artificial Happiness' terrific CD, "Charlie Comes First," will delight on many levels, not least as a straight-up rock manifesto.

"Prophecy Say" by Phil Joseph & New Wave (Reggae Artist from England)

Phil Joseph & New Wave, release four versions of the titled song "Prophecy Say," an excellent Reggae based CD. With over twenty five years in the music industry, Phil Joseph is no stranger to the music scene as he is a well rounded singer, songwriter, and performer. The first three versions feature Joseph's vocals which are polished and crisp while his melodic lyrics reveal emotive issues. The lead in on the drums adds a building momentum while the harmonies add a touch a flavor to this catchy tune. The musicality is solid as the syncopated drum beats swirl around the sharp guitar riffs and bright organ chords. As the last version is an instrumental only, this would make a fine background score for anything needing a nice bouncy beat. Reggae fans will want to hear the smooth vibes of "Prophecy Say," as it is a finely crafted, spirited song.

"Lost in Time" by John Walter (Jazz/Piano Artist from England)

Jazz pianist John Walter's debut CD, "Lost in Time," was a long time in the making, but more than worth the wait. An accomplished player of skill & sensitivity, the London-schooled, Devon-based Walter has been performing & teaching in England since the 80s, building up a resume that has included stints with acclaimed UK soloists like Andy Sheppard & Paul Dunmall. Displaying an affinity for the kind of lyricism & lush chords of a Keith Jarrett or Bill Evans, "Lost in Time" is a 12-song collection of original, piano-only jazz compositions filled with quiet intensity. "There Will Be Peace" & "Song to An Empty Room," with their solemn & moving melodies, are highlights of Walter's expansiveness, each clocking in at over 6 minutes, as the composer explores every nuance of his themes. The more up-tempo "Wosa" hints at pop sensibilities before drawing back upon its jazz roots, while title-track, "Lost in Time," works the upper registers in an other-worldly performance of real beauty. As overdue introductions go, John Walter's "Lost in Time" CD is a much-appreciated look at an artist stepping out of the shadows as an accompanist to spotlight his own considerable talents as a composer & jazz pianist.

"Echoes" by Journeyman (Easy Listening Artist from The United Kingdom)

Journeyman, who is artist /composer Nick Constant, releases his first solo CD, "Echoes," which is comprised of melodic and interesting collections of Classical/World Fusion flavored with an exotic flair. Constant's travels have taken him to Africa and the Middle East and he has creatively crafted a collection of easy listening songs using the various tones and sounds of his experiences. His song titles reflect the beautiful mosaic of arrangements Constant delivers throughout his album. A soft, calming effect imbues "Sunrise," as the sounds of slow flowing water cascades around an acoustic guitar playing a sweet lullaby melody. An angelic voice on the title track, "Echoes," delicately rises above the chiming church-like bells in a relaxed, orchestrated production. Creatures of the jungle come to life in harmonious sync on "Equator." Take a journey to the Middle East on "Sands of Time" and become a part of the syncopated rhythm and relax to a soothing voice. Unwind and enjoy the peaceful sounds and melodies of Journeyman's CD, "Echoes," as it will take you to a place of quiet serenity.

"As the White Crane Flies" by 12000 Miles (UK/NZ electronica artist collaboration) Intriguing the listener with experimental Electronica, 12000 Miles releases their debut album, titled "As the White Crane Flies." The musical pair began this collaboration, as their group name suggests, miles apart sharing their works of MIDI files through the internet. The end result is an outstanding and brilliant collection of free forming works utilizing the highly talented forte of Lain Dixon Iain as flute player. Opening up the disc is "Alphabet Hunt (from A)," which delivers a driving industrial tonality, while the smooth and interesting flute surprises the listener with instrumental interplay. Strong and powerful synth hits and generous percussive beats bring together the absorbing energy "Endangered Species" offers up. "V Formation" shows a slightly softer side of the album, with the flute being soothing and melodic with a light and airy quality. If you like multi-layered experimental music with first-rate production that is flavored with the dynamics of the flute, then 12000 Miles's "As the White Crane Flies" will be one album you will thoroughly enjoy.

Singer/songwriter Steve Pedvin's engaging style of guitar driven pop/rock is on full display on his excellent CD, "Sparks in the Sky." Often recalling the fertile talents of Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and particularly his classic "Brothers in Arms" LP, "Sparks in the Sky" 13 tuneful tracks run the gamut of potent rockers such as "Alive," to solemn ballads like "When Lightning Strikes," to feet-tapping swing on "Stuck in a Hole," all the while effected with the know-how and sly humor, of a performer of impeccable artistry. As a guitarist, Pedvin's tone and phrasing are spot on, whether invoking the spirit of Jimi Hendrix on "Nowhere to Go" or providing an acoustic picking-style backing on the solid, folk-like number, "Thirty Five." As a vocalist, he displays a range of tone and inflection that serve the song first and foremost and, as a writer, Pedvin's songs are as original as they are musically satisfying, reminding us all over again why rock 'n'roll remains a vibrant and important art form, even as it nears the end of its sixth decade. Steve Pedvin's aptly-titled "Sparks in the Sky" CD is a vision of musical sparks that illuminates the sky.
